The Sterkfontein Caves Folly is a radical intervention into one of humanity's most historic sites of evolution and discovery, blending architecture, biology, and future-forward design. The folly is both a sculptural and functional piece, symbolizing the intersection of past and future, decay and growth, and humanity's evolving relationship with nature.
Temporal Timeline
Past: The stalagmites reference ancient geological formations and the slow process of natural change.
Future: The spine symbolizes humanity’s capacity for innovation and our responsibility to create sustainable, symbiotic relationships with nature.
Present: The interplay between organic and synthetic materials highlights our moment in time—where we must decide how to shape our legacy on Earth.
Stalagmites – Are rising and falling organically from the cave floor/celling and are made of a bioengineered bacterium-based material. This innovative substance slowly disperses over time, contributing to the ecosystem. The bacteria release minerals and nutrients as they degrade, creating a fertile environment for subterranean ecosystems to develop.
VERTEBRAE- Growth Medium Filament
The spine of the folly is a dynamic, framework constructed from a 3D-printed filament embedded with nutrients and microbial cultures. This filament serves as a growth medium to naturally the structure. Over time, the spine transforms into a living, green sculpture, echoing the resilience and adaptability of nature.
