"Isikhathi Sethu, "Our time"-Empowerment and resistance, is a study on the intersection of African contemporary art and design. When looking at the history of art and design the narrative is focused on the western perspective excluding another important linear time line. The time line of the global south and its diaspora have been forgotten , specifically its influence of the wests Iconic artists is massively overlooked.

African art and design had previously been relegated to Craft, which diminishes its profound and historical significance. This marginalization is a manifestation of colonial power dynamics that have long tryrannized. Reclaiming the fundamental values of African art severs a powerful tool in the process of decolonization. Defying these hierarchies allows us to create a more accurate representation of global art, one that is inclusive and equitable.

The two time lines followed are that of the Guardian statues of Gabon and Pablo Picasso's portrait of a lady. At the receprical of these times lines their lies cubism. Eulogized as an achievement of the west, the style dates back to as early as the 17th century in Gabon.

I conducted an interview with Professor Thembinkosi Goniwe, who is a art historian and researcher who's projects reflect postcolonial and decolonial criticism in the context of black radical thoughts and Global South discourse.
